Taiyu-in

Plan extra time for Taiyuin, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, because it sits a little back from the main Toshogu area and is usually much quieter than the busier sights. The route rises through several gates, and the setting is calm and formal, with a very different feel from Toshogu.

Inside, you’ll see heavy use of black lacquer and gold leaf, along with many ornate buildings and 315 stone lanterns.
