At a Glance
In 1602, this temple was recognized as one of only 18 official Buddhist universities in the Kanto region and was permitted to display the Tokugawa shogun's sacred hollyhock crest.
The temple's bell from the Genroku era (1688-1704) still rings today, originally used to signal when the temple's public bathhouse opened at 3 PM for commoners.

Touch the bright red Obinzuru-sama statue in front of Donryu Hall by placing your hand on the same body part where you're experiencing discomfort, as locals believe this healing Buddha figure can cure illnesses when touched.
Visit on the 8th of any month to experience Donryu Day, when the temple grounds fill with street performers, traditional storytelling (nankingtamasudaré), and flea markets, but expect significantly larger crowds than usual days.
Plan your visit as part of the Koedo Kawagoe Seven Gods of Fortune pilgrimage, which takes about half a day to complete and connects this temple's Fukurokuju shrine with six other locations while passing through the warehouse district and Candy Alley.
Take the C02 bus from Kawagoe Station toward Hikawajinja-mae and get off at Renkeiji Temple North stop (220 yen), which places you just a 2-minute walk from the entrance and is more convenient than walking from either nearby train station.
