During a 16th-century war, a priest was killed defending the temple. Blood flowed from the hand of an Amida Buddha statue, shocking the attackers into fleeing and saving the hall from fire.

Motoyama-ji has a five-storied pagoda, one of only four such pagodas on the Shikoku Pilgrimage route.
