Its location at the western end of Shijō Street places Matsunoo Taisha near Arashiyama, tying it to Kyoto's western historic area.
A noble founded the shrine in 701 after witnessing a turtle bathing under the sacred waterfall. The spring water is still considered so blessed that local sake and miso makers come here to pray their products will be protected.
