Gosho-ji is the 78th sacred site on the Shikoku Henro, Japan's famous 88-temple pilgrimage.
Kobo Daishi carved a wooden statue of himself at this temple in 807 while making a vow to ward off evil. Locals still worship it today as the 'Yakuyoke Utazu Daishi' (Evil-Warding Daishi).
When Ippen Shonin visited in 1288, he introduced Nenbutsu Odori, a Buddhist chant performed with dancing. This unique practice has been preserved here for nearly 800 years.
