Zentsuji's five-story pagoda took 60 years to build, constructed story by story, and stands 43 meters tall. It was completed in 1902 after being rebuilt four times throughout history.

Zentsu-ji belongs to Shingon Buddhism, the esoteric Buddhist school closely associated with Kukai.
