The temple burned down four times during the Edo period. After the devastating 1864 fire during the Kinmon incident, rebuilding didn't start until 1879 due to political turmoil from the Meiji Restoration.
Locals affectionately call the two Hongan-ji temples 'Onissan' (Honorable Mr. West) and 'Ohigashisan' (Honorable Mr. East), treating them like friendly neighbors rather than grand religious institutions.

Higashi Honganji is the head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Otani sect, about a five-minute walk from Kyoto Station. Entry to the grounds is free, and the temple draws a mix of tourists and local worshippers throughout the week. On weekends, a small market sometimes sets up near the gate.
The two main structures, the Goei-do (Founder's Hall) and the Amida-do, are designated Important Cultural Properties and are enormous even by Japanese temple standards. The Goei-do is considered one of the largest wooden buildings in the world.
