Byodo-ji

You can reach Byodo-in in about a 10-minute walk from Keihan Uji Station or JR Uji Station; coming from the Omotesando side, aim for Uji Bridge. Admission is 700 yen for adults, and going inside the Phoenix Hall costs an extra 300 yen.

Interior viewings run at 10, 30, and 50 minutes past the hour for groups of 50, with a separate reception in the garden, so buy that ticket first and tour the museum while you wait. Weekdays are easier. The Phoenix Hall is the building on the 10-yen coin, and the vermilion hall reflected across the pond is the highlight; the museum holds recreations of the seated Amida Buddha and the wall paintings, and the approach is lined with matcha shops.
