Maegami-ji is Temple No. 64 on the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage.
The temple was forced to close in 1868 when the government ordered the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, confiscating its territory. It took 21 years before Maegamiji could reopen in 1889.
