Maegami-ji is a Shingon Buddhist temple with ties to Shugendo, the mountain-ascetic tradition.
Emperor Kanmu prayed here to be healed from illness in the 8th century, and when his wish was granted, he built seven main buildings and gave the temple its name, Konjikiin Maegamiji.
