Hiyoshi Taisha is a historic Shinto shrine in Ōtsu, Shiga, heading Japan's 7th largest shrine network with ~3,800 affiliated shrines. One of the Twenty-Two Shrines, it enshrines Ōkuninushi and Oyamakui. Its buildings are National Treasures.

Why you should go

The shrine's original deity Oyamakui lived atop Mount Hiei until being relocated down the mountain in 90 BC, predating the famous Enryaku-ji temple by nearly 900 years.

The precincts cover about 400,000 square meters and are designated as a National Historic Site.
