Atago Shrine stands near the summit of Mount Atago in Kyoto and is the head shrine of Japan’s many Atago shrines. Founded in the early eighth century, it is revered for fire prevention and protection from calamity. Visitors reach the mountaintop on foot from Kiyotaki, a demanding ascent of about two to three hours.
