Arako Kannon is one of the four Owari Kannon temples positioned by Tokugawa Ieyasu to guard Nagoya Castle from the cardinal directions, a spiritual fortress protecting the new capital.
Founded in 729 by the legendary monk Taichō, Arako Kannon was revived in 1537 by Maeda Toshiie, the future warlord, whose childhood home stands just a short walk away via the 'Inuchiyo Route'.

Visit on the second Saturday of each month between 1 PM and 5 PM if you want to see the temple's collection of over 1,000 Enku Buddhist sculptures.
If you visit during the New Year period or Obon season, expect significant crowds and arrive early in the morning to experience the temple's typically quiet atmosphere.
Combine your visit with a walk along the nearby Inuchiyo Route to Maeda Toshiie's birthplace, which is signposted from the temple's south side.
Arrive by car if possible, as the temple is over 10 minutes on foot from the nearest train stations (Arako Station is about 5-7 minutes away) and has a spacious parking lot.
