Wakamiya Hachimansha is the tutelary shrine of Nagoya, at the south end of Sakae. Said to date from the seventh or eighth century at Nagoya's old Imaichiba, it was moved here in 1610 when Tokugawa Ieyasu built Nagoya Castle and became the family shrine of the Owari Tokugawa. The Wakamiya-odori avenue takes its name from it. Rebuilt in 1957 after the 1945 air raid.
