Comfortable shoes matter here. The steep stone stairway is the main approach to the hall, and the climb is worth taking slowly, especially if you walk through the vermilion torii gates rather than cutting straight to the top. The full approach is the experience, not just the destination.
Once you reach the top, pause before heading inside. The main hall overlooks Kamakura, and the city views from the upper level are a quiet reward after the ascent.
