Togo Jinja

Tōgō Jinja is a Shinto shrine in Harajuku, Tokyo, dedicated to Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō, who is enshrined here as a kami. Established in 1940, it was destroyed in the Bombing of Tokyo and rebuilt in 1964, making it a postwar reconstruction with strong memorial value. The grounds include a small museum and a bookshop devoted to Tōgō. The shrine is near the intersection of Takeshita Street and Meiji Avenue, close to Harajuku Station, and it also holds Tōgō’s original battle flag from the Battle of Tsushima, acquired in 2005. Although Tōgō’s remains are buried at Tama Cemetery, the shrine remains an important site of military remembrance and modern Shinto worship. It is a local pilgrimage point for those interested in naval history and Japan’s wartime-era memorial culture.
