The shrine was founded in 1186 when Hōjō Masako, wife of shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo, saw Mt. Fuji across the Tamagawa River and enshrined a statue to her patron deity here while following her husband to battle.
The shrine is built on top of a Kofun-period burial mound called Sengen Shrine Tumulus—an ancient keyhole-shaped tomb where only the round rear portion survives, with the front section lost to development.
The shrine's hand-washing basin is uniquely shaped like Mt. Fuji, and spinning wheels inscribed with passages from the Kojiki (Japan's oldest chronicle) stand before the first torii gate—a rare feature among shrines.
