Jizoji is a Buddhist temple in Itano, Tokushima, known as the fifth temple of the Shikoku 88 pilgrimage. Founded in 821 by Kobo Daishi, it is famous for the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats, a large ginkgo tree, and its long history of worship.

Why you should go

Only about 200 of the original 500 arhat statues survive today after a careless visitor caused a devastating fire in 1915 that destroyed much of the hall.

Jizo-ji is Temple No. 5 on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, making it one of the early stops for pilgrims.
