The shrine stores a portable Kaguratai shrine used exclusively for the festival held every May 5th. It's designated as a Municipal Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
The guardian dog statues flanking the shrine were donated by Hida's legendary carpenters, the same craftsmen whose skills built temples using timber that has withstood over 1,000 years of heavy snow.

Founded in 718 CE, this is considered the oldest shrine in Takayama, and one of three shrines known collectively as the Higashiyama Sanja. You reach it by climbing a stone staircase that runs between Daio-ji and Unryu-ji temples, passing through a vermilion torii before continuing up to the main hall.
The shrine enshrines Kukuri-hime-no-Mikoto, a deity associated with matchmaking and reconciliation, alongside Izanagi and Izanami. The main hall was built by the Mizuma school of Hida craftsmen and is designated as part of Japan's cultural heritage.
