God of Mountains, Sea, and War
Ōyamatsumi is a prominent deity in Japanese mythology, revered as the god of mountains, the sea, and war. He appears in both the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki under several variant names and is considered an elder sibling of the great deities Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo.
He is widely enshrined across Japan, most famously at Ōyamazumi Shrine on the island of Ōmishima in the Seto Inland Sea, which has long served as a major center of his worship. Offerings of armor and weapons by warriors seeking his blessing made this shrine one of the foremost repositories of ancient military artifacts in the country.
Among his other names are Watashi-no-Ōkami, reflecting an association with the sea, and Sakatoke, a name linked to sake and its production. His broad dominion over both the heights of mountains and the depths of the sea speaks to his status as a powerful and wide-ranging kami.
