What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Omotesando is a zelkova-lined avenue in Shibuya and Minato wards, Tokyo, leading to Meiji Shrine. It runs from the Aoyama-dori crossing to the entrance of the shrine and was laid out in 1919 as the shrine's front approach. The shrine honours Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken.

Today the avenue is known as an architectural showcase, with flagship stores by well-known architects, including Louis Vuitton by Jun Aoki, Tod's by Toyo Ito, Dior by SANAA and Gyre by MVRDV. Omotesando Hills by Tadao Ando opened in 2006 on the site of the former Dōjunkai apartments. International luxury boutiques stand beside the Kiddyland toy store and the Oriental Bazaar. The quieter side streets, known as Ura-Harajuku, hold small cafes, bars, restaurants and independent boutiques.
