Hase-dera

Hase-dera (長谷寺), founded in 686 in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, is the head temple of Shingon Buddhism's Buzan sect. Its Main Hall, a designated National Treasure, crowns a hillside approached by a famous covered stairway of 399 steps, making it one of Japan's most celebrated pilgrimage sites.
