Tsukiji Hongan-ji (築地本願寺), officially romanized Hongwan-ji, is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple in Tokyo’s Tsukiji district. It is one of the best-known temples of the Nishi Hongan-ji branch and an important urban place of worship near Tsukiji Station. The present temple dates to 1934, after the original Edo-period temple was destroyed in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and rebuilt on its current site. The complex is known for its Indian-influenced main hall, designed by Chuta Ito, and for its role in daily Buddhist services and funeral rites. Visitors encounter the main worship hall, Sanmon gate, and connected temple facilities used for religious ceremonies and community activities. Tsukiji Hongan-ji is part of the wider Jodo Shinshu tradition, with links to the Shinran pilgrimage tradition and Buddhist practice in modern Tokyo.
