When Emperor Yuryaku disrespected a deity during a hunt in 675 AD, he exiled the god to Tosa Province. That banished deity became one of the two main gods worshipped at this shrine.
Tosa Jinja is the ichinomiya, or top-ranked shrine, of former Tosa Province in Kochi.
