The temple served as the family temple for at least nine different feudal domains, including powerful clans like Chōshū and Tosa, whose lords and retainers were buried here when they died in Edo.
This temple housed the獅子窟学寮, a prestigious Buddhist school that later merged with two other institutions to become Komazawa University, one of Tokyo's major universities today.

Explore the beautiful garden located behind the main hall, and visit the cemetery area on the elevated ground behind the temple, which houses graves of historical figures including military leader Akashi Motojiro and feudal lord Hayashi Tadataka.
Visit on a weekday around lunchtime for a peaceful, solitary experience, as the temple grounds are typically very quiet with few to no other visitors during these hours.
The temple does not offer御朱印 (goshuin/temple stamp books), as indicated by posted signs, so don't plan your visit expecting to collect a stamp for your pilgrimage book.
There are no benches or seating areas in the temple grounds, and no public toilets available, so plan accordingly before your visit.
Take time to admire the impressive Four Heavenly Kings statues (四天王像) positioned on both sides of the main gate, which are noted as particularly splendid examples of temple guardian sculptures.
Plan for a cultural and religious visit rather than only sightseeing, as Seishō-ji is described as both a landmark and a functioning temple.
The temple is free to enter, but visitors may feel uncertain about whether they can freely explore the grounds due to its grand, imposing architecture.
