Nanzo-in (Sasaguri)

Know before you go

The 41-metre bronze reclining Buddha is the main attraction, and you can go inside the statue for ¥500 (15-20 minutes; no photography inside).

Bring plenty of ¥100 and ¥500 coins. The grounds hold hundreds of rakan figures and smaller Buddha statues where visitors leave offerings.

The temple has at times restricted or charged foreign visitors separately from Japanese visitors. Check the current policy before you go and carry ID.

Nanzo-in is the head temple of the Sasaguri Shikoku 88 pilgrimage, so it is worth treating as a starting point for the circuit rather than only a photo stop.
