Located in Hachimanchō (literally 'Hachiman Town'), the shrine gave its name to the entire neighborhood, showing its central role in shaping Morioka's urban geography.

The shrine's Chagu Chagu Umakko horse parade was designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1978.

Founded in 1062 during the wars to subdue the Emishi people, the shrine was completely rebuilt in 2006, nearly a millennium after its original construction.
