Ryuanji is the birthplace of the Japanese lottery. During the Edo period, it issued the 'Minoh Fukutomi' lottery, and the tradition continues with 'Minoh Tomi' celebrations every October 10.
The temple's main gate was relocated from the Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1809, making it a rare piece of imperial architecture repurposed for religious use.

Facilities
Visit on October 10 for Minoh Tomi, the annual lottery festival that draws worshippers from across the region, or come on a weekday morning if you prefer a quieter experience with fewer crowds around the Benzaiten shrine.
The temple sits halfway between Hankyu Mino Station and Minoh Waterfall, so plan to combine your visit with a hike to the falls or a walk through Meiji no Mori Minoh Quasi-National Park rather than treating it as an isolated stop.
Bring coins or cash for offerings at the Benzaiten shrine, as many visitors make small donations when seeking blessings for success in the performing arts or good fortune, which is a core practice at this temple.
If you're interested in Shugendo mountain asceticism practices, the Gyojado Hall offers insight into this living tradition, and the annual Great Homa Ceremony in fall attracts practitioners from throughout the Kinki region if you want to witness an active ritual.
Check out the Benzaintendo Hall's unique architecture that blends Shinto shrine styles with Buddhist temple design, and don't miss the temple gate relocated from Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1809 or the Hoo-kaku Hall, a Taisho-era building now designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
Allow time to view the Important Cultural Property statue of Nyoirin Kannon housed in the Kannondo Hall, as this sculpture represents centuries of devotion and is not typically found in every temple you visit in the region.

Ryuanji sits on the path to Minoh Waterfall, so it is easy to visit while walking the falls trail. The temple is said to be over 1,300 years old, and its main deity, Benzaiten, is regarded as Japan’s oldest. It also appears on local pilgrimage routes, and goshuin are available.
Plan around the special goma fire ritual and the spring and autumn open temple periods, which are held twice a year. Reviewers also mention the temple can be quiet and clear with the sound of the river and birds, so it is a good stop if you want a calm break from the hike.
