Plan on at least two hours, more if you want to see everything. The cable car departs at :00, :20, and :40 past each hour, so check the schedule before you start walking or you may wait a while. The ride itself takes about two minutes and drops you close to the main hall. If you're reasonably fit, walking up is fine, but the path has steep stairs and uneven gravel slopes, so wear proper closed-toe shoes. Sandals, heels, or anything without grip will make the climb genuinely difficult.
At the main hall, step onto the Kongosho, the circular stone mandala in the forecourt.
