Kurama-dera was founded in the 8th century, making it one of Kyoto's long-established mountain temples.
In 1949, Kurama-dera broke away from traditional Buddhism to establish its own religion, Kuramakōkyō, worshipping a trinity that includes a Defender Lord who supposedly arrived from Venus 6.5 million years ago.
Despite being burned down repeatedly throughout medieval times, the temple's Buddhist statues and treasures were always rescued and survive today as National Treasures of Japan.
