Despite being steps from the world's busiest train station in Shinjuku, Kantsuji maintains a remarkably serene atmosphere. The temple opens daily at 7 AM for early morning meditation and reflection.
Kantsuji Temple is located in Kikuichō, the birthplace of famous novelist Natsume Sōseki. The district was actually named by Sōseki's father in 1869, combining the family crest symbols of chrysanthemum and well.

The temple sits along Natsume-zaka slope in Shinjuku, southeast of Waseda Station, making it easy to combine with a walk through the neighborhood. The main gate area is currently being rebuilt due to road-widening work, so expect some construction around the entrance.
Inside, there is a Bishamonten hall and a main hall to visit, and the garden behind the main building has seasonal flowers. The grounds are quiet and well kept.
Two things draw repeat visitors: the cut-paper (kirie) goshuin and a resident shiba inu named Subaru. The goshuin stand out because past seasonal designs are kept available, not just the current month's, so collectors can choose from the full back catalog.
