Two emperors loved this temple so much that the surrounding area was renamed 'Imperial Land' (Misho) after Emperor Heijo, who sent an envoy here every year to perform fire rituals.
Kobo Daishi carved three sacred statues from a single tree in 807, then turned the leftover wood into a boat-shaped seal inscribed with prayers for healing all human illness.
