The Ebara clan's connection to the Minamoto (Genji) clan runs so deep that the nearby district once had a place name 'Genji-mae' (before the Genji), a legacy still preserved in the local elementary school's name.
Founded in the 1260s on land that once held the mansion of the Ebara clan, this temple emerged during an era when Buddhism and Shinto coexisted peacefully, with the adjacent Hachiman Shrine built at the same time.

Visit during the Oeshiki festival (typically October) or Higan observance to see the temple come alive with worshippers and experience authentic Nichiren Buddhist ceremonies, or choose weekday mornings if you prefer a quieter, more contemplative visit.
Pay respects at the Ebisu statue enshrined here, one of the seven Ebara Lucky Gods scattered across the Shinagawa district, and ask the monks for a stamp in your Shichifukujin pilgrimage book if you're collecting them from all seven locations.
The temple grounds contain multiple historical sites and panoramic viewing areas, so allow at least 45 minutes to explore the entire property and take in the views rather than rushing through in 15 minutes.
The temple has deep historical connections to the Ebara clan and the Yanagishima area dating back to the 1260s, so reading about this local history before your visit will help you appreciate the significance of what you're seeing on the grounds.
Arrive with an understanding that this is an active Nichiren Buddhist temple, not a museum, so maintain quiet behavior during your visit and remove your shoes when entering any indoor spaces as instructed by signage.
