Bitchu-koku Soja Shrine sits in Soja City, a region famous in Japanese folklore as the legendary home of demons defeated by Momotaro, the Peach Boy.
The shrine is located near Bitchu Kokubunji Temple, which houses a five-story pagoda built in 1844, said to be the last pagoda constructed in Japan.

Visit on a weekday morning before 10 AM if you want to experience the shrine grounds with minimal crowds and have space to walk the peaceful areas without feeling rushed.
The shrine is about a 10-minute taxi ride from Soja Station (roughly 1,200 yen), which is faster than waiting for the local bus if you're on a tight schedule or visiting with elderly companions who may find walking difficult.
Combine your shrine visit with the Kibi Bike Trail by renting a bicycle from Soja Station, which lets you see multiple historical sites in the area including burial mounds and temples within a few kilometers rather than visiting in isolation.
Spring is the best season to visit when cherry blossoms are blooming and the shrine hosts seasonal events to celebrate the end of winter, plus the nearby five-story pagoda is illuminated at night during this period for a spectacular view.
Bring a picnic or bento box to enjoy on the shrine grounds, as the peaceful environment and views of surrounding rice fields and flowers make it an ideal spot to sit and rest between exploring other nearby historical sites.
If you're arriving by public transit, tell the bus driver 'Kokubunjito' and they'll know exactly where to drop you off, as the local Yamate Bus uses landmark names that are more reliable than street addresses for navigation.
