Definition
Zen is a tradition of Japanese Buddhism that emphasises seated meditation (zazen) as the direct path to awakening. Its main Japanese schools include Rinzai and Soto.
Where it comes from
Zen grew out of the Chan school of Chinese Buddhism, which itself drew on Indian meditation traditions, and it took firm root in Japan from the medieval period onward. The word Zen is the Japanese reading of a term meaning meditative absorption. Rather than treating scripture or ritual as the main road to awakening, Zen puts the emphasis on direct practice and personal realisation, often passed from teacher to student over years of training.
What sets it apart
The heart of Zen practice is zazen, seated meditation in which you sit still, steady the breath, and let thoughts settle. In Japan the tradition is carried mainly by two schools. Rinzai often works with koan, short puzzling phrases meant to break ordinary reasoning, while Soto tends to stress "just sitting" for its own sake. Both value simplicity, discipline, and attention to everyday acts.
What to look for
Zen temples are known for their restraint: plain wooden halls, raked gravel gardens, and quiet meditation rooms rather than crowded, colourful displays. Many welcome visitors to try zazen. If you join a session, sit quietly, follow the guidance of the resident, and keep noise to a minimum out of respect for those practising.
Common questions
- What is the difference between Rinzai and Soto Zen?
Rinzai and Soto are the two main Japanese schools of Zen. Rinzai is often associated with koan practice, using puzzling questions to break ordinary patterns of thought, while Soto emphasises just sitting in zazen, known as shikantaza, though both schools share seated meditation as their core.
- Can visitors try zazen meditation at a Zen temple?
Yes, many Zen temples in Japan offer zazen, or seated meditation, sessions that visitors can join, sometimes with instruction in English. It is best to check the temple's schedule in advance, as these sessions are often held at set times.
- Is Zen a religion or a form of meditation?
Zen is a tradition of Japanese Buddhism, not simply a meditation technique. Seated meditation, called zazen, is central to it, but Zen is a full Buddhist path with temples, monks, and centuries of history.
