Goddess of Rice and Marriage
Kushinadahime is a goddess in Japanese mythology and the Shinto tradition, known by several names including Kushiinadahime and Inadahime. She is most celebrated as one of the wives of the storm god Susanoo, who famously rescued her from the fearsome eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi.
As a consort of Susanoo, she holds a central place in the Gion cult and is enshrined as a principal deity at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. Her name carries associations with rice paddies, linking her to the vital agricultural staple that sustains Japanese life.
Her story of rescue and marriage to Susanoo is one of the most celebrated episodes in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, the foundational texts of Japanese mythology. She embodies themes of protection, fertility, and the bond between divine and human realms.
