The temple was originally founded as Kōtoku-in in 1480, then renamed Gotoku-ji in 1659 after the posthumous Buddhist name of the Ii clan's second feudal lord, Ii Naotaka.
Gotoku-ji Station and the surrounding area are filming locations from Makoto Shinkai's anime 'Your Name: 5 Centimeters per Second.' The streets look almost identical to scenes in the film.
