Asuka-dera was built because Soga no Umako vowed to construct a temple if he defeated his anti-Buddhist rival Mononobe no Moriya in 587. He won, and Japan got its first full temple complex.
The temple precincts are designated a National Historic Site, giving the grounds official cultural protection.
