In 1181 Kiso Yoshinaka gathered his army at Shiratori-gawara, across the Chikuma River, and is said to have prayed here for victory.
Legend says that in the 1541 Battle of Unnotaira, Sanada Yukitaka escaped by charging straight through the enemy lines under the shrine's divine protection.

Combine your visit with a walk along Unno-juku, a preserved post town on the old Hokkoku Kaido lined with traditional inns and merchant houses.
Just west of the shrine, on the site of the former Jizo-ji, stands the Nakadachi Jizo, known for matchmaking. Its fair on November 3 draws crowds.
