The temple is associated with Chosokabe Motochika, the powerful Sengoku-period lord who ruled much of Shikoku.
The temple houses statues carved by Unkei, Japan's most famous Buddhist sculptor, including an adorable figure of Zennishi Doji posed with his head cocked to one side. All are designated National Important Cultural Properties.
