Nyonindo is the sole survivor of seven women's temples that once ringed Mount Koya, making it the last physical reminder of a thousand-year tradition that excluded women from one of Japan's holiest mountains.
A Jizo statue called Otake-Jizo stands near Nyonindo, donated in 1745 by a woman named Take Yokoyama who came here to pray for her deceased husband, showing how female pilgrims found spiritual solace at this excluded threshold.

Include Nyonindo in a broader Koyasan pilgrimage rather than visiting it as a standalone stop. The small temple takes about 15 to 20 minutes to see. Arrive early or come on a weekday for a quieter visit with fewer tour groups.
Nyonindo is remembered as the last surviving women’s sanctuary from the period before 1872, when women were barred from Mount Koya’s inner precincts.
