The shrine's annual festival on May 8 has been celebrated for centuries, drawing pilgrims who make the mountain ascent to participate in traditional rituals.

The shrine sits at 929 meters (3,048 feet) elevation, making it one of Tokyo's highest Shinto shrines. You can reach it by cable car, then walk the final 1,000 meters through mountain trails.

Despite being in Tokyo, the shrine lies within Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, a vast 1,250 square kilometer wilderness spanning four prefectures.

Futomani divination, an ancient Shinto fortune-telling practice using heated turtle shells or deer bones, is still performed at this shrine today.
