The Amitabha Buddha statue enshrined here is the final work of Genshin (942-1017), a Buddhist scholar so influential that he's considered the founder of two different Buddhist schools, and the carving tools he used are still inside the statue.
The temple's three-story pagoda was built in the 17th century specifically to pray for the repose of Tokugawa Hidetada, the second shogun, and houses sculptures of Manjusri Bodhisattva created by master carver Unkei.

Facilities
Visit in November or early December if you want to see the temple's back garden illuminated at night. The special nighttime viewing runs from mid-November through early December, and you'll pay 1,000 yen to see the autumn maple leaves reflected in the Garden of Purple Clouds with the gate lit up, which is closed to visitors the rest of the year.
Arrive via the narrow alley from Marutamachi-dori Street, about 250 meters west of Shirakawa-dori on the west side of Okazaki-jinja Shrine.
Come on a weekday morning rather than weekends to avoid the crowds that gather during cherry blossom season in April and autumn foliage season in November.
Bring sturdy shoes because you'll need to climb multiple sets of steps to reach the pagoda at the top of the graveyard and to navigate the narrow lanes connecting to nearby Shinyo-do Temple.
