The temple enshrines Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha, the Medicine Buddha of Shingon Buddhism, whose healing powers have drawn devotees seeking wellness and spiritual remedy for over a thousand years.
The temple offers mail-order goshuin (sacred temple stamps), allowing pilgrims across Japan to receive blessed stamps by post, a modern adaptation of a centuries-old Buddhist tradition.

Visit on a weekday morning to experience the Water Temple's minimalist concrete spaces and reflecting pools without the weekend crowds that can fill the narrow pathways and make photography difficult.
If you're unable to visit in person, contact the temple directly about their mail-order goshuin service, which they do offer, so you can still receive a stamp and blessing from this remote island location.
Allow 45 to 60 minutes to visit the temple. Take your time on the descending walkway, sit quietly in the main chamber, and explore the upper grounds. Rushing can detract from Tadao Ando’s contemplative design.
