Haruna Jinja

Haruna Jinja was founded in 586, making it one of Gunma's oldest recorded Shinto shrines.

Mount Haruna forms part of the legendary Three Mountains of Jōmō, alongside Mount Akagi and Mount Myōgi. The shrines on these three peaks maintain a special spiritual connection spanning centuries.

Haruna Jinja enshrines deities of water, fire, and agriculture, an unusual combination tied to nature and harvests.

During the 14th century, this Shinto shrine became affiliated with Kan'ei-ji, a powerful Buddhist temple. All Buddhist elements were stripped away during the Meiji era's forced separation of the two religions.
