Plan to spend 30 to 60 minutes at the temple, allowing time to walk the mountain path toward the cliff Buddha, view it from multiple angles, and sit quietly in the cave space.
At a Glance
Over 3,000 hydrangea bushes bloom around the temple each June, earning it the nickname 'Hydrangea Temple' and creating a striking contrast between delicate pink and purple flowers and the stern stone Buddha.
The Buddha was carved during the third major pyroclastic flow from Mount Aso 120,000 years ago, while most other rock Buddhas in Bungo-Ono were carved into stone from a much more recent eruption 90,000 years later.

Facilities
Plan to spend 30 to 60 minutes at the temple, allowing time to walk the mountain path toward the cliff Buddha, view it from multiple angles, and sit quietly in the cave space.
Arrive by taxi from JR Asaji Station (about 10 minutes) or drive your own car, as the temple sits in a rural mountain area with no nearby public transportation.
Visit between mid-June and early July to see the temple's 2,000 to 3,000 hydrangea flowers in full bloom, which frame the 11-meter cliff-carved Buddha statue in soft pinks, purples, and whites.
