What makes this place special?
At a Glance
Ueno is a district in Taito ward, Tokyo, built around Ueno Station, long the terminus for trains bound for northern Japan. It belongs to the old Shitamachi, the low city, which is associated with working-class traditions and a distinct local accent.
North of the station, Ueno Park holds the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, the National Museum of Nature and Science, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and Ueno Zoo. The park stands on the grounds of Kan'ei-ji, the Tokugawa shoguns' family temple, which was largely destroyed in the 1868 Battle of Ueno. Bentendo temple sits on an island in Shinobazu Pond, and Ueno Toshogu enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu. South of the station, the Ameya-yokocho market streets grew out of a postwar open-air black market.
