What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Pontocho is a narrow historic street between Sanjo and Shijo in central Kyoto. Traditional building fronts, fine latticework and its setting beside the Kamo River give the district a distinctive scale. It is also one of Kyoto's historic performing-arts neighborhoods.

Know before you go

  • Explore the streetscape on foot and choose a specific restaurant if you want to dine here. Access, booking policies and prices vary between businesses. River-facing dining platforms are a seasonal feature, so check the establishment's arrangements rather than assuming outdoor seating will be available.
