What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Ninenzaka is a stone-paved pedestrian street in Kyoto's Higashiyama area. Its traditional buildings and small shops make it a natural place to slow down between nearby sights. The street joins the route through Sannenzaka towards Kiyomizu-dera, allowing these places to form one connected walk.

Steps interrupt the route, and the narrow street can become busy. Leave room for people passing through and avoid planning a tight connection immediately afterwards. A suggested 30-minute stop is a flexible browsing allowance, not a measured walking time. Add separate time for a meal or a longer shopping stop. Each business sets its own hours, and visiting the street does not guarantee that a particular shop will be open. If stairs are unsuitable, choose an alternative route before setting out.
