What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Mount Utatsu is a hill on the east side of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, overlooking Kanazawa Castle. Its slopes are laid out as Utatsuyama Park, which is among the Hundred Historic Parks of Japan, and Toyokuni Shrine stands on the hillside. The mountain has many other names, including Mukaiyama and Garyuzan, and a survey triangulation point named Kanazawa marks the summit.

Because the hill looks down on the castle, ordinary people were forbidden to climb it throughout the Edo period, and the ban is linked to the Ansei Tearful Uprising of 1858, in which seven ringleaders were executed. In 1867 the Maeda lord lifted the restriction and built a medical institute and workshops here. Earlier, Aoki Mokubei had opened the Kasuga kiln on the mountain, which helped revive Kutani ware. Today the park holds an iris garden around Hyotan Pond, monuments to Izumi Kyoka and Tokuda Shusei, and the site of the old medical institute.
