What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Enoshima is a small island about four kilometres around, off the coast of Fujisawa in Sagami Bay, linked to the mainland by a bridge and a sandbar. It is a leading destination of the Shonan coast and has some of the closest sandy beaches to Tokyo and Yokohama. The whole island is dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, said to have raised it from the sea floor, and Enoshima Shrine is counted among Japan's three great Benzaiten shrines.

Past the shrine, visitors reach the Samuel Cocking Garden at the summit, and three escalators called the Luminous Way spare them the long stairs. On the seaward side, the Iwaya caves, carved by waves, were once used for training by Buddhist monks. Couples attach padlocks at Lovers' Hill. Enoshima was the Olympic harbour in 1964 and the sailing venue in 2020, and it is also known for its stray cats.
