God of Learning and Scholarship
Tenjin, whose full ceremonial name is Tenman Daijizai Tenjin, is the Shinto kami of learning, scholarship, and the intelligentsia. The name combines the characters for 'heaven' and 'deity,' reflecting his celestial status. He is the divine form of Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), a celebrated scholar, poet, and statesman of the Heian period.
After Michizane's death in political exile, a series of disasters and calamities struck the capital, which the people attributed to his vengeful spirit. To appease him, he was enshrined and elevated to divine status. Today he is venerated at thousands of Tenjin shrines — most notably the great Tenmangu complexes at Kitano in Kyoto and Dazaifu in Fukuoka.
Beyond scholarship, Tenjin is also revered as a thunder deity and is associated with the syncretic traditions that blended Shinto and Buddhist belief. Students across Japan visit his shrines to pray for success in examinations, making him one of the most widely worshipped kami in the country.
